Preventative maintenance is vital to safety
The majority of lifeboat call-outs are to leisure boaters with engine or other primary gear failures. For this reason BYM is committed to a preventative maintenance strategy which aims to keep ahead of potentially dangerous problems for both sailing yacht and power boat owners alike.

Engines
The operating conditions for engines in leisure boats are about as hostile it gets. The salty, damp environment and long periods of inactivity challenge even the best engineering. That’s why charter companies find the engines which get the most use are also the most reliable. In fact, we advise our Management clients to let us run their engines regularly to keep the parts moving, to keep the fluids circulating and to top up the batteries. Whatever your preference, if you ask us to look after your engine, we will recommend regular checks and a preventative approach to maintenance. The proven long term benefits include: improved reliability, lower running and repair costs and higher resale value.

Winches
Winches are highly stressed components even on smaller boats. Without proper maintenance they can easily fail causing not only costly damage but also danger to the crew. If you ask us to look after your winches, we can maintain their efficiency and reliability as well as extending their working life.

Rigging
With many moving parts, high loads and a hostile environment, a thorough rig check makes good sense at least once a year for cruising boats. Again, we recommend preventative maintenance not only because rig failure is a major safety issue but also because it is much more costly than timely replacement. For racing boats, a monthly rig check and tune up will improve safety and performance.

Systems
Properly specified and installed water and gas systems need minimal maintenance. However, failure would be at least inconvenient and at worst disastrous. System integrity should be checked annually and the water pump should be winterised to avoid frost damage.
